Can you spell “DEDICATION”? Continuing a nearly three-decade tradition, the Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield will once again sponsor its town-wide spelling bee for fifth-graders. The 29th annual event, scheduled for Thursday, February 25 at 7 pm in the Roger Ludlowe Middle School auditorium, promises to keep audience members on the edge of their seats as the chosen young scholars vie to outspell their opponents. (Snowdate is Wednesday, April 21, same time and location).
The participants include 47 classroom winners from fifth-grade classes in Fairfield’s public and private schools, plus a corresponding number of alternates. The top winners of the town bee will receive savings bonds donated by local banks and will advance to the Connecticut Junior Women, Inc. State Spelling Bee to be held May 15 in Portland, CT.
Family members who attend are being asked to bring a new board book for second- through eighth-grade readers. The books will be donated to the JWC’s 2010 charitable partner, Brady’s Smile, which operates support programs for children and families at Bridgeport and other area hospitals. In addition to the spelling bee, the Junior Women’s Club hosts a Touch-a-Truck to fund scholarships for high school women and “A Visit to Santa’s House,” which supports local charities.
