JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB OF FAIRFIELD GENERAL MEETING

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15

The Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield will hold its February general meeting on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Burr Homestead, 739 Old Post Road.

The meeting will feature a check presentation to the club’s charitable beneficiary, The Thomas Merton Family Center, a Bridgeport-based facility that provides high-risk families with food and clothing, along with parental and educational support. Proceeds from the club’s “A Visit to Santa’s House” event last December will go to support the Center and its mission.

The Club will also continue planning for spring projects, including the Town Spelling Bee. Members and guests will also have the opportunity to sign up for upcoming service projects and social activities, including movie nights and mom and tot outings.

Open to women in Fairfield and surrounding towns, the JWC is a non-profit service organization that gives members the chance to make new friends while giving back to the greater community through social and personal enrichment programs for women and fundraisers such as “Touch-A-Truck” and “A Visit To Santa’s House.” The club welcomes prospective members to all general meetings. To learn more about the club, call Membership Co-Chair Michelle DeMartino at 203.984.1876 or visit www.jwcfairfield.com.

Our library system in Fairfield is a true treasure.  With more programs for children and parents than we can possibly list here, many of which are free, and several of which you can simply drop-in, their Calendar of Events page should be bookmarked on all Fairfield parents’ computers.   Programs are held in both the Main Branch downtown and the Fairfield Woods Branch on Fairfield Woods Rd.  Seriously not to be missed!

Meerkat Exhibit at the Maritime Aquarium

May 28th – Feb 28th

Meerkats are members of the mongoose family that live in social “mobs” or “gangs” of up to 30 members in burrows in the Kalahari Desert, in the southern African nations of Botswana and South Africa. No mere cats, meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are fascinating for living in structured but cooperative societies, including a foraging strategy where adults take turns standing guard upright on their hind feet, watching for predators, while the others eat. The exhibit will feature six sibling meerkats – three males, three females – born in the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their Maritime Aquarium habitat will offer windows into their underground burrows, so all meerkat activity will be within view. And there will be a viewing bubble, so visitors can stand up right among the meerkats. Maritime Aquarium general admission is $11.75 adults, $10.75 for seniors 65+, and $9.75 for children 2-12. For more information about The Maritime Aquarium’s exhibits, IMAX movies and programs, go online to www.MaritimeAquarium.org or call (203) 852-0700.

“Africa: From the Desert to the Sea” at The Maritime Aquarium

Aug 15, 2011 – Feb 28, 2012

“Africa: From the Desert to the Sea” Special exhibit open daily through February 2012. Explore the aquatic wonders of Africa and discover how the continent’s fish – though much different from those in Long Island Sound – face similar environmental challenges. See amazing fish from the Nile River, the lakes of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the Red Sea and Africa’s shorelines, including the remarkable ecosystem of Madagascar. Species highlighted include exotic air-breathing lungfish that can survive for a year if their waterhole goes dry, and electric catfish that use bioelectric radar to sense surroundings and zap their food in a dark and murky habitat. Other exotics include knifefish, bichirs and – appropriately for Africa – elephant-nose fish. Colorful cichlids and coral reef species shine in shimmering rainbows. Interspersed throughout are important messages about animal adaptations, the importance of habitat preservation and conservation, and stories that show how fish from the other side of the world face challenges similar to those in Long Island Sound. Sponsored by Bank of America and included with Aquarium admission.

ADMISSION: Aquarium only: $12.95 for adults, $11.95 for seniors 65+ and $9.95 for children 2-12. Members free. Adventure Pass (Aquarium + IMAX movie): $19.45 for adults, $17.95 for seniors 65+ and $14.45 children for 2-12. Thrills Pass (Aquarium + Ride Film): $19.20 adults, $16.20 children (ages 2-12), $18.20 seniors 65+. Members pay $4.50. Value Pass (Aquarium + IMAX movie + Ride film): $24.45 for adults, $22.95 for seniors 65+ and $19.45 children 2-12. IMAX movie: $9 adults, $8 seniors and $6.50 kids 2-12. Members save $2. Get your kids, the dog and your picnic basket ready. Celebrate the start of a new school year Saturday, September 24th at the Welcome Club of Fairfield and Easton Annual Fall Family Kick-Off Party. This year’s party is at Lt. The 17th annual Rob Mathes Christmas Concert is Saturday, December 18, 8pm, at the Palace Theatre in Stamford! This is a fabulous holiday concert and a family tradition for many. The concert is expected to be fully sold out, so get your tickets soon: http://www.scalive.org

Mathes, often lovingly referred to as “Mr. Christmas” by fans and fellow musicians for his nearly two-decades of performances of one of our region’s “can’t miss” holiday traditions, will once again be joined by his all-star band, featuring bassist Will Lee of David Letterman’s famed “CBS Orchestra” and longtime Mathes’ guitarist Billy Masters; the 30+ member Choir of Saints and Friends; award-winning vocalists including James “D-Train” Williams, and others. The set list will be full of what fans have come to expect from Mathes – a seasonal mix of original holiday compositions alongside imaginative and entertaining re-workings of holiday classics – all spanning the worlds of R&B, pop, jazz, classical and then some.

  • Come join local mom and travel agent, Allison Umbricht, for a book signing at Borders in Fairfield for her new book “The Mom’s Guide to Traveling with Kids.” Saturday, Novembr 13 at 1pm.

Just in time for families to start planning their holiday travels “The Mom’s Guide to Traveling with Kids” offers tips and tricks to make traveling with the family a breeze. The Mom’s Guide is a mom-to-mom guide (excuse the cliche – dad and grandparents of course will benefit too!) that will empower you to have what you need to travel with your kids and have fun doing it. This 155-page book is jam-packed with tips and stories from the author and other frequent-flier moms. You will learn new ideas to use for every stage of your travels. Careful planning for each part of the trip will take you from thinking “Am I crazy?” to “That’s the best thing I ever did!.”

Come by with or without the kids (there will be a treat for them!)
