77th Annual Dogwood Festival: The Perfect Way to Spend Mother’s Day Weekend!

77TH ANNUAL DOGWOOD FESTIVAL

MAY 11-13, 2012

at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church

1045 Old Academy Rd, Fairfield, CT 06824

Our Spirit of Community
Goodwill * Outreach * Fellowship

The Greenfield Hill Congregational Church 77th Annual Dogwood Festival will be held on the church, grounds on Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-13, 2012. The Dogwood Festival is the harbinger of spring and the whole town of Fairfield has come to own that symbol of the Dogwood. The feeling of driving up Bronson Road to see the beauty of the pink, white, and purple blooms against the stark contrast of an early spring sky is extraordinary.

Our 77th Annual Dogwood Festival is a time-honored tradition that has had a strong evolution and continues to receive extensive community support,” said Alida Ward, co-minister. “We will be featuring long-time arts and crafts vendors, as well as several new artisans and craftspeople this year. The weekend-long events are shaping up to be some of our most comprehensive and exciting events of the year in Fairfield and perhaps since the Festival’s inception,” she added.

“A portion of monies raised will support local, national and international charities like Operation Hope,Children At Risk Fund, Janus House, Center for Women & Families, and Project Learn with the balance of the fundraising to support the church mission and vision as part of the fabric of the local community,” said David Rowe, co-minister.

Michael Howard, a longtime church member and Dogwood Festival Properties Coordinator added, “The Dogwood Festival has, for 77 years, been a wonderful tradition within the Fairfield community, involving so many in our congregation to make it the success that it is every year, and with the majority of the proceeds going to mission-supported activities and projects.”

The Beginnings of the Dogwood Festival

1936 Due to the scores of people who drive through Greenfield Hill during May to view the dogwoods in bloom, the Ladies Sewing Society decides to make use of their beautiful attraction. Led by Mrs. Reverend Reginald Lundgren, a card table is set up in front of the church to sell homemade wares including: aprons, pot holders and pickles as a fund raising event for the church’s mission work.

1938 After a weekend visit to Connecticut, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt writes in her “My Day” column [there] “is an avenue of pink and white dogwood on Greenfield Hill such as I have never seen anywhere else in this country”.
